Shooting 35mm film back in 2007

Back in 2007 I was studying my BA degree in Photography, Video and digital imaging at Sunderland University.

My photography journey began way before these images. With a point and shoot auto focus camera. Every sleepover and holiday chronicled by captain mediocre.

These images are a lazy interpretation of a common photography theme and each negative was covered in scarf fluff. I loved photography but was always untidy. That’s my way.

In 2007 I was 22 years old and technically a mature student at the University. Nuts, I know but maturity is measured by age and not by common sense. I don’t make the rules…

One of the major things I’d get pulled up on in University was focus in my photographs. Julia Margaret Cameron and I concur, and to this very day I say “Sharp enough, kid.”

My university days were spent kicking about in Backhouse Park. Lallygagging around making terrible art and trying to pass it off as relevant. I was always of the mind that one should live and make art about that life. There has to be interesting things that YOU want to portray. Something to fixate on.

Luckily, I lived like a mad head. Like a mortal (pissed) immortal.

One day, I’ll tell all of my adventures. Probably in the style of Samuel Pepys, if he was a slightly disturbed disabled female in 2024.

I think it’s important to show the journey. I didn’t appear in a vacuum.

I was an untrained eye with probably 1 good idea in 100 cack ideas. That’s alright.

Photography and art are learnt skills. Passions pursued regardless of how many cack artworks that must come before.
